How Babies Learn To Stand Up

Baby trying to stand up from the floor on their own.

Have you noticed your baby practicing yoga? Or something like it…

They just started crawling, and now they are getting into Down Dog!

That's your baby starting to experiment with how to get up into standing on their own. But don't worry, you still have a little more time before they are walking. Babies experiment with this for a while, and “Down Dog” pose is just the beginning of it.

They will need to figure out how to move from “Down Dog” to squatting by walking their hands back, and then push up into standing. Try it out yourself. You'll see how you need to move your weight back over your feet in order to push up through your legs into standing.

If you want to make it easier for babies to figure out…

 Try this:

Put a small stool or couch cushion on the floor for your baby to put their hands on while squatting to stand.

By putting their hands on the stool instead of on the floor, it gives your baby a little boost and it helps them find their balance over their feet in squatting.

This is the stool I use in my physical therapy sessions 👇🏼 It is the perfect height for babies!
