Toy Placement For Rolling from Tummy to Back

Many babies naturally learn to roll from their back to tummy before they learn how to roll off of their tummy. If this is your baby, maybe you’ve noticed them roll over onto their tummy at night and start crying because they can’t roll back? And you’re all losing sleep over it? You’re not alone!

If you want to help your baby learn to roll from their tummy to their back…

Try this:

During tummy time, place toys off to the side.

You'll know that your baby is ready to try this if they are able to hold their head up and prop on their elbows.

Your baby will turn their head to look at the toy and weight shift to the opposite side to unweight their reaching arm.

This head rotation and weight shift is the foundation of rolling from tummy to back.

Take the activity a step further by elevating the toy from the floor. As your baby turns their head to follow the toy up, you'll notice them shift their weight even more, and maybe even roll over.
